Delhi begins overhead wire-free transformation

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday launched a significant infrastructure initiative aimed at transforming the capital into an overhead wire-free city. The pilot project was inaugurated at Janata Flats in Shalimar Bagh, where Gupta and Delhi Minister Ashish Sood unveiled the beginning of efforts to shift electrical wiring underground.

Speaking at the launch, CM Gupta said, “Our vision is a capital city where not a single overhead wire is visible. The tangled web of wires has long posed safety risks, especially in narrow lanes. This project is a gift to Delhi and part of our ₹100 crore budget allocation to improve infrastructure.”

She emphasized that the initiative would eliminate fire hazards and visual clutter. “Soon, residents will look up and see the sky, not wires,” she added Minister Ashish Sood reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening Delhi’s power infrastructure. “With no funds earlier for capital expenditure, this effort marks the beginning of a wire-free, hazard-free Delhi,” he said.

CM Gupta also addressed the issue of waterlogging after recent heavy rains. While expressing satisfaction that key points like Minto Road and ITO remained clear, she instructed officials to intensify anti-waterlogging measures across the city. She held a high-level meeting with PWD Minister Pravesh Verma and senior officials, directing immediate inspection and maintenance of roadside drains. Gupta warned that negligence regarding waterlogging would not be tolerated, calling for continuous action throughout the monsoon. The Delhi government plans further monitoring and action to ensure a safer and cleaner urban experience for citizens.
