Ahead of the Dahi Handi festival on August 16, the Maharashtra government has announced an insurance scheme for 1.5 lakh ‘Govindas’ who take part in the traditional human pyramid activity. The scheme offers a maximum payout of ₹10 lakh in case of accidental death or total permanent disability during the event.
A government resolution (GR) issued on Wednesday stated that the state will bear the insurance cost for all registered participants. The Maharashtra State Govinda Association will verify the training, age, and participation of Govindas and submit their details to the Sports and Youth Services Commissioner in Pune.
The insurance plan outlines six accident categories. In case of death or total permanent disability (like loss of both eyes or limbs), a compensation of ₹10 lakh will be provided. For the loss of one eye, arm, or leg, ₹5 lakh will be given. Partial or permanent disabilities will be compensated based on the insurance company's standard percentage-based criteria.
Additionally, medical expenses of up to ₹1 lakh will be covered for injuries sustained during Dahi Handi performances.
This move is aimed at promoting the traditional sport while ensuring the safety and well-being of its participants. The Dahi Handi celebration, part of Janmashtami, involves teams of young participants forming tall human pyramids to break a pot filled with curd, milk, and butter, symbolising Lord Krishna’s playful childhood deeds.
