CPCB Report: Maha Kumbh water quality fit for bathing
New Delhi
A recent report by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) submitted to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) states that the water quality during the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj was suitable for bathing. The findings are based on a statistical analysis of water samples collected between January 12 and February 22.
Variability in Water Quality Data
The CPCB noted significant variations in parameters such as pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and fecal coliform (FC) levels. The differences were observed across different dates and locations, making it necessary to conduct a statistical analysis to determine overall water quality.
Monitoring and Statistical Analysis
Water quality was monitored twice a week at five locations on the Ganga and two on the Yamuna. Given the variability in data, CPCB analyzed key water quality indicators from 10 mass bathing locations over 20 monitoring rounds. The median values of pH, DO, BOD, and FC remained within permissible limits.
Previous Concerns Over Water Quality
Earlier, CPCB had reported that water quality in certain areas did not meet primary bathing standards due to high fecal coliform levels. Increased human activity during the Kumbh was cited as a contributing factor.
The case is scheduled for hearing on April 7.
Key Findings
Fecal Coliform (FC): 1,400 units/100 ml (Limit: 2,500)
Dissolved Oxygen (DO): 8.7 mg/L (Minimum Required: 5 mg/L)
Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD): 2.56 mg/L (Limit: ≤3 mg/L)
