Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has lashed out at the Modi-led BJP government over its handling of the devastating floods ravaging northeastern states. In a sharp critique, Kharge accused the Centre of ignoring critical developmental needs and failing to fulfill its repeated promises of flood mitigation in Assam.

Kharge highlighted that despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2016 pledge to make Assam flood-free and Home Minister Amit Shah reiterating it in 2022, the state continues to suffer immensely. “Double engine governments have clearly betrayed the people of Assam,” Kharge posted on X (formerly Twitter), sharing disturbing visuals from a flooded Guwahati.

The Congress chief urged the Prime Minister to release financial assistance from the PM CARES Fund, claiming that crores remain unused and unaudited. He stressed that the Centre must extend immediate support to all flood-hit northeastern states, including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Sikkim.

The region Is grappling with relentless rainfall, landslides, and overflowing rivers. In Assam alone, at least 10 people have died, and over 4 lakh residents across 20 districts have been impacted. Seven major rivers are in spate, worsening the situation for low-lying communities. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also expressed concern over the loss of life and disruptions in Guwahati. He appealed for expedited rescue and relief efforts and called upon Congress workers to provide assistance. The IMD has predicted more heavy rainfall, signalling a potentially worsening crisis across the region.
