Cong launches nationwide campaign against Amit Shah’s remarks on Ambedkar
NEW DELHI
The Congress has intensified its attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah over his controversial remarks on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Shah’s statement that invoking Dr. Ambedkar’s name has become a “fashion” has drawn sharp criticism from the Congress, which accused the BJP of disrespecting the architect of the Indian Constitution.
In response, the Congress announced a nationwide campaign to highlight Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy and what it called the BJP’s attempts to undermine the reservation system. Party General Secretary K.C. Venugopal revealed plans to hold press conferences and organize “Ambedkar Samman Marches” across the country. “We will fight to protect Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s legacy against Manusmriti worshippers. The upcoming week will be marked as Dr. Ambedkar Samman Saptah,” Venugopal wrote on social media. Party leaders, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi, have demanded Amit Shah’s resignation over the issue.
Speaking to reporters, Kharge said, “Amit Shah’s remarks are an insult to Dr. Ambedkar and the ideals he stood for. If the Prime Minister truly respects Dr. Ambedkar, he should take immediate action against Shah.” The remarks have also triggered protests in Parliament, with opposition MPs staging demonstrations and raising slogans demanding justice for Ambedkar’s legacy. Both Houses of Parliament witnessed disruptions as the issue dominated proceedings. This campaign marks the Congress’s continued efforts to position itself as the defender of social justice, using Ambedkar’s towering legacy to appeal to marginalized communities.
