Cong Accuses PM Modi of Dodging Trump’s Mediation Claim
New Delhi
The Congress on Wednesday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is avoiding a clear denial of former US President Donald Trump’s repeated claims about mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Congress leaders said Modi is on a weak wicket and has a lot to hide. Trump, while speaking to the media aboard Air Force One, reiterated that he helped stop a conflict between the two nations.
Congress’ Jairam Ramesh questioned why Modi hasn’t directly refuted Trump’s claims, suggesting it reflects guilt or weakness. Pawan Khera compared Trump to a snake hissing truths into Modi’s ear, saying Modi missed the chance to end the issue by simply denying the claim during the Lok Sabha debate.
Rahul Gandhi also challenged Modi in Parliament, daring him to say clearly that Trump is lying. Modi, however, did not directly mention Trump and instead said no global leader had asked India to stop Operation Sindoor. After the session, Gandhi pointed out that Modi still didn’t deny Trump’s claim, despite it being repeated nearly 30 times.
India maintains that the May 10 ceasefire agreement with Pakistan was a result of direct talks between their military officials, not foreign mediation. Modi reportedly told Trump during a phone call that India would never accept third-party involvement. The ceasefire followed India’s Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians.
