CM Yogi Seeks Quick Action on Displaced Families' Land Rights
Lucknow
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to take firm and prompt action to grant legal land ownership rights to families displaced from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and settled in various UP districts. In a high-level meeting, he said this was not just about land, but about acknowledging the long struggle of thousands of refugee families who have waited decades for proper rehabilitation.
Between 1960 and 1975, after Partition, many such families were relocated to districts like Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Bijnor, and Rampur. Though they were allotted land and settled through transit camps, legal ownership has remained pending due to record mismatches, administrative delays, and land being registered under the Forest Department. Many families, despite living and farming on the land for years, still lack official documents.
CM Yogi stressed that these families should be treated with dignity and sensitivity. He noted that some families have built permanent homes, while original allottees are no longer present, and in some places, land was taken over informally without legal completion.
With the 2018 repeal of the Government Grant Act, the Chief Minister asked officials to explore alternative legal options within the current laws to resolve these long-standing issues. He described the move as a historic step rooted in humanity, social justice, and national responsibility. This is not just a policy issue, but a moral commitment to restore dignity to those who have waited in uncertainty for far too long, he said.
