A 40-year-old head constable named Senthil from Taramani Police Station tragically died by suicide on Wednesday by setting himself on fire near the Taramani MRTS railway station. Senthil was deeply upset about a departmental inquiry scheduled for that day related to a drunk driving accident.

The night before, Senthil had crashed his car into a two-wheeler on the Maduvankarai flyover while intoxicated. The rider, 54-year-old Murugesan, was seriously injured and is now being treated at Government Royapettah Hospital. Senthil tried to flee but was stopped by bystanders and later found to have consumed alcohol. Videos of the accident and his escape attempt spread widely on social media, adding public pressure.

On the morning of the inquiry, Senthil reported for duty but then set himself ablaze before the meeting. Despite quick medical help, he was declared dead. Police officials have started investigating and may improve support systems for officers facing disciplinary action.
