Caste Census to be part of National Census: Modi's decision
New Delhi
The Centre announced that the caste census will be conducted alongside the upcoming population census. This decision was made during a Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA) meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed the move, stating that caste enumeration would be included in the forthcoming census.
This decision carries significant political weight, as the caste census has been a key demand of the Congress-led INDIA Bloc, resonating with the public. The government's unexpected move is seen as a shift in political dynamics, likely influencing public sentiment and social equations.
Previously, the government had avoided such an exercise, citing potential societal divisions. However, Congress and its allies, including the RJD, have strongly advocated for the census, arguing that every community should be represented in government based on their population size. By announcing the caste census, the BJP-led government has effectively countered the Congress narrative.
The timing is crucial, as the announcement comes just ahead of Bihar's Assembly elections, where caste plays a significant role in politics. The BJP’s decision to include the caste census in the national census allows it to present itself as committed to social justice while challenging opponents, especially Congress, for using the issue for political gains. This move could reshape the political landscape in the state and beyond.
