Call for NRI representation in Parliament meeting
New Delhi
During a meeting on Tuesday, the parliamentary committee on External Affairs discussed the possibility of giving Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) representation in Parliament, highlighting their growing numbers and unique concerns. Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda proposed this idea, citing examples like Italy, which reserves legislative seats for its citizens abroad, to ensure better representation of diaspora issues.
The Standing Committee, led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, also reviewed various topics related to the Indian diaspora. Tharoor described the discussion as detailed and lively, with active participation from MPs. Several organizations, including Norka Roots from Kerala and the Punjab government’s Department of NRI Affairs, presented useful proposals. One suggestion emphasized training skilled workers based on the needs of foreign countries, aiming to streamline immigration processes and prevent illegal attempts to migrate.
Additionally, the Ministry of External Affairs shared updates on a bill addressing emigration issues, which is currently under discussion. Tharoor mentioned that state governments have requested to be consulted on the bill's provisions.
