Budget session resumes amid opposition’s challenges
New Delhi
The second phase of the Budget session begins on Monday, with the opposition gearing up to corner the government on issues such as alleged electoral roll manipulation, renewed violence in Manipur, and India’s trade policies with the US. The session is expected to see heated discussions as both sides push their agendas.
The government’s priority is securing approval for budgetary grants, passing the Waqf Amendment Bill, and obtaining clearance for the Manipur budget. Home Minister Amit Shah will seek parliamentary approval for President’s Rule in Manipur, while Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the state’s budget.
Meanwhile, the opposition, led by the Trinamool Congress, has raised concerns over alleged duplication in Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers. While the Election Commission has denied accusations of voter list manipulation, it has assured corrective measures. Opposition parties, including the Congress, DMK, and Shiv Sena-UBT, plan to highlight this issue in Parliament.
The Congress has also announced its intent to oppose the Waqf Amendment Bill and highlight election irregularities. Additionally, trade tensions with the US and political debates on parliamentary delimitation are expected to fuel further discussions.
With the session set to continue until April 4, the coming weeks will likely witness intense parliamentary debates and strategic moves from both the ruling party and the opposition.
