Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee on Saturday reported that he had spoken with the Director General of the Border Security Force (BSF) regarding the detention of jawan Purnam Kumar Sahu by the Pakistan Rangers. Banerjee was assured that efforts are ongoing to bring him back safely.

Sahu, a constable with the 182nd BSF, was captured by the Pakistan Rangers on Wednesday while working in a field near the Ferozepur district of Punjab. He is from West Bengal. Banerjee shared in a post on X that the BSF DG confirmed that all relevant agencies are actively working to secure Sahu’s return. He also mentioned that Pakistan is taking some time, but they are expected to hand over Sahu soon. Banerjee added that Sahu is reportedly safe and in good health in Pakistan.

Sahu, who had unintentionally crossed into Pakistani territory while resting under a tree, has been held by the Pakistan Rangers. His family in Rishra, Hooghly district, remains distressed. His father, Bholanath Sahu, expressed his concerns, saying they have been in contact with authorities, but no specific timeline for his return has been given. Sahu’s wife, Rajani, recalled their last phone call before he went missing, while their young son anxiously waits for his father’s return. The family is hoping for his safe return, with Rajani urging the government to do whatever it takes to bring him back.
