The historic British-era Chief Minister’s residence on Kanke Road in Ranchi will soon be replaced by a modern, state-of-the-art CM House. On Buddha Purnima, Chief Minister Hemant Soren, along with his wife and MLA Kalpana Soren, performed a ceremonial puja and laid the foundation for the new building.

The current CM House, spread across 22 acres, has been deemed structurally outdated and inefficient by the state’s Building Construction Department. As a result, a new facility will be built, designed to meet modern needs, including disaster resilience and administrative efficiency.

Until the new complex is ready, the Chief Minister’s office will temporarily operate from Residence No. 5 on Kanke Road, previously occupied by former AJSU MLA Sudesh Mahto.

The new CM House will be earthquake-resistant, meeting the latest safety and security standards. It will feature multiple lounges, visitor halls, a press room, and integrated office spaces for the Chief Minister and senior officials. Additional facilities will include accommodations for security personnel, guest rooms for dignitaries, high-level meeting spaces, and advanced surveillance systems.

Originally built in 1853, the building has a history of political myths and superstitions, with many officials unable to complete their terms while residing there. Despite this, the new CM House marks a shift towards a modern era of governance, symbolically leaving the past behind and ushering in a new chapter for Jharkhand.
