BJP's Shehzad Poonawalla apologizes for remark
New Delhi
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla issued an apology on Friday for his controversial comment about AAP MLA Rituraj Jha's surname. In a video shared on X, Poonawalla expressed regret, saying, “I apologize with folded hands to my Purvanchali brothers and sisters. My words were hurtful, and I offer no justification.” He emphasized his respect for the hardworking people of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
The controversy began during a heated debate on a news channel on Wednesday, where Poonawalla made a remark about Jha’s surname, which was deemed offensive by the AAP. The comment followed a jibe from Jha, who had previously mocked Poonawalla’s surname.
The incident drew criticism not only from AAP but also from BJP ally Janata Dal (United), which called for action against Poonawalla. In Delhi, Purvanchal refers to the region of eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, home to many influential voters in the capital.
As Delhi prepares for assembly elections on February 5, with votes being counted on February 8, the contest is seen as a direct battle between AAP, which has been in power since 2015, and the BJP, while Congress strives to regain its foothold in the city, which it ruled for 15 consecutive years until 2013.
