BJP leaders Satya Sharma and Sunder Singh were elected as chairperson and deputy chairperson, respectively, of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s (MCD) standing committee on Thursday. This marks the formation of the committee after a gap of over two-and-a-half years, which had caused delays in major policy and development decisions.

The standing committee, consisting of 18 members, plays a crucial role in managing the MCD’s finances. It must approve all projects costing over ₹5 crore. With no committee in place, several important sanitation and infrastructure projects had been on hold.

Satya Sharma, a councillor from Gautampuri in Northeast Delhi, is a three-time councillor and former mayor of the erstwhile East Delhi Municipal Corporation. She received 11 votes, defeating AAP nominee Praveen Kumar, who got seven votes. Sunder Singh also won with 11 votes, defeating AAP’s Mohini Jeenwal.

Currently, the BJP holds a majority in the standing committee with 11 out of 18 seats.
