Bill to streamline immigration and foreigners’ services introduced in LS
New Delhi
A new bill aimed at streamlining immigration and foreigner-related services, including entry, exit, and stay regulations, was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. However, the opposition has raised concerns, calling it a violation of constitutional provisions.
Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, dismissed these objections, asserting that the central government holds the legislative authority under the Union List to introduce laws on immigration. He emphasized that while India welcomes tourists, it is the government’s duty to maintain national peace and sovereignty. The Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025, seeks to modernize and simplify existing procedures, ensuring a more structured approach to managing foreign nationals. The bill is expected to enhance security measures, improve tracking mechanisms, and regulate overstays more efficiently. Opposition leaders argue that the bill could lead to excessive government control and may infringe on individual rights. They insist that certain provisions require further scrutiny to prevent potential misuse.
Legal experts also believe that if passed, the law could significantly alter the framework governing immigration policies in India. The proposed legislation is likely to spark intense debate in Parliament, with the ruling party advocating for stricter regulations and the opposition pushing for amendments. As discussions unfold, stakeholders from various sectors will closely watch the bill’s progress and its potential impact on India’s immigration policies.
