Bengal suspends 12 medics over expired IV fluid
Kolkata
The West Bengal government has suspended 12 doctors from Midnapore Medical College and Hospital for their negligence in a case involving the death of a woman and the illness of four others following childbirth. This occurred after the alleged administration of expired intravenous fluid. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the incident, stating that her government does not support such negligence.
Banerjee announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh and a government job for the family of the deceased woman. She revealed that reports from both the CID and an expert committee indicated negligence by several doctors, leading to their suspension. The 12 suspended doctors include the Medical Superintendent, Vice Principal, the RMO, and six post-graduate trainees.
The Chief Minister also confirmed that the CID would file an FIR against the doctors and proceed with the legal investigation. The tragic incident, where one woman died and four others fell critically ill, prompted the health department to form a 13-member committee to investigate the matter further.
Newborn dies at MMCH in Bengal
A newborn baby, whose mother was one of three women critically ill after childbirth at Midnapore Medical College and Hospital (MMCH) in Paschim Medinipur district, died on Thursday morning due to multiple organ failure. The baby, born on January 8, never cried after birth and suffered from severe health issues, including kidney disorders. Despite being placed on ventilation, doctors could not save the infant.
This tragic incident followed reports that the women fell critically ill after receiving allegedly 'expired' intravenous fluid. One woman died, and the other two remain in critical condition. In response, the state government has set up a 13-member committee to investigate the matter and ordered a CID probe. The three women have been transferred to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata for further treatment.
