Bengal Speaker admits privilege motion over Suvendu’s CM remarks

West Bengal Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee on Wednesday accepted a privilege motion brought by several Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLAs against Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari. The motion alleges that Adhikari made defamatory and false comments about Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee outside the Assembly, claiming she praised Pakistan during a House speech. The Speaker has referred the motion to the Privileges Committee, which is expected to submit its report by the next session, likely in September.
The motion, signed by senior TMC leaders such as Chandrima Bhattacharya, Shovandeb Chattopadhyay, Arup Biswas, Indranil Sen, and Nirmal Ghosh, triggered a protest from BJP legislators. They argued that comments made outside the Assembly cannot be considered a breach of privilege. Following the Speaker's decision, BJP members walked out in protest.
