Atishi urges Delhi CM for fee regulation
New Delhi
Delhi Assembly Leader of Opposition Atishi wrote to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday, urging her to call a special session and introduce the Fee Regulation Bill to control rising private school fees. Atishi demanded the bill be sent to a Select Committee with members from both BJP and AAP for broad public consultation, including parents, before final approval. She warned that passing the bill as an ordinance without debate would make people believe the government favors private schools over parents.
Atishi also accused the BJP government of ignoring fee hikes since coming to power and hiding the bill after it was introduced in the cabinet. She criticized Education Minister Ashish Sood’s plan to pass the bill through an ordinance, calling it a law through the back door that protects private schools.
In May, the Delhi Cabinet approved the Delhi School Education Transparency in Fixation and Regulation of Fees Bill, 2025, aimed at regulating fees in 1,677 private schools. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the government acted quickly to address parents’ and students’ concerns about rising fees. However, Atishi insists public opinion must be heard through proper legislative procedures before the bill becomes law.
