7 urns with human remains: Rs 1,500 crore fraud at Lilavati
New Delhi
The Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust, which manages Mumbai’s renowned Lilavati Hospital, has filed complaints with the Enforcement Directorate and Bandra Police Station, accusing former trustees and associates of misappropriating over Rs 1,500 crore. These allegations emerged after a forensic audit of the hospital’s financial records. The trust also claims that black magic rituals were conducted on the hospital premises.
The trust filed multiple FIRs against former trustees, following instructions from the Bandra Magistrate Court. These FIRs cover financial misconduct and occult practices. Prashant Mehta, a permanent trustee, stated, More than three FIRs have been filed, and a fourth one is pending, focusing on black magic. He emphasized the trust’s commitment to ensuring that funds are used solely for patient care, stressing that the financial misconduct not only betrayed the trust but also undermined the hospital's mission.
Following a lengthy legal battle, the current trustees ordered a forensic audit. The auditors revealed that over Rs 1,500 crore was misappropriated by former trustees, most of whom are based in Dubai and Belgium. The trust has filed complaints with the police regarding forgery and fund mismanagement, and these cases have been transferred to the Economic Offences Wing for further investigation.
Additionally, a case is being investigated in Gujarat regarding stolen valuables from a hospital facility. Mehta has urged the Enforcement Directorate to investigate these crimes under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The trust remains focused on holding all wrongdoers accountable.
