Vijayakanth’s cult classic Captain Prabhakaran returns to theatres
The iconic Tamil film Captain Prabhakaran, starring the late Vijayakanth, is all set to return to theatres 34 years after its original release. Sparrow Cinemas will re-release a remastered 4K version of the film with 7.1 surround sound in over 500 screens, offering fans a fresh experience of the cult classic.
Originally released in 1991 during Tamil New Year, the film was directed by R. K. Selvamani and became a major box office hit. It was Vijayakanth’s 100th film and earned him the title Captain among fans. The film’s success was so significant that Vijayakanth named his son Vijaya Prabhakaran in its honor.
Captain Prabhakaran was a milestone in Tamil cinema and proved pivotal for many actors. Sarathkumar, previously known for villain roles, transitioned into a leading hero after playing Vijayakanth’s friend. Mansoor Ali Khan’s role as a fierce forest bandit cemented his place as a top villain in Tamil films.
The film was also known for its powerful dialogues by Liyakath Ali Khan, which resonated with the common man and highlighted issues of bureaucracy. Audio cassettes featuring only the dialogues were released and sold widely. Ilaiyaraaja’s music was another major highlight, with every song becoming a chartbuster. Fans can now relive this memorable cinematic experience on the big screen once again.
