Surat court summons Anurag Kashyap for May 7
Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is facing legal trouble after his recent remarks about the Brahmin community sparked public outrage. A Surat court has now issued a notice summoning him to appear on May 7, warning that failure to do so will lead to further legal steps. The court has also ordered that the notice be delivered to his residence.
The complaint was filed by lawyer Kamlesh Rawal, who insists Kashyap won’t be let off easily this time. According to Rawal, Kashyap has made several provocative comments in the past, especially about religious groups. This latest controversy was triggered by Kashyap’s social media post on April 16, 2025, where he criticized the censorship of the film Phule, a biopic on social reformer Jyotirao Phule. Many interpreted his remarks as offensive to the Brahmin community.
Although Kashyap later issued a heartfelt apology, saying he lashed out in anger and deeply regretted his choice of words, the backlash hasn’t stopped. In his apology, he acknowledged the hurt caused, especially to those in the Brahmin community he respects, and vowed to manage his anger and speak more thoughtfully in the future. He also asked critics not to target his family.
Despite this, another legal complaint was filed in Indore by Anoop Shukla, who accused Kashyap of trying to incite hatred. With multiple cases now pending, Kashyap’s controversial remarks continue to cause serious legal and public consequences.
