Simbu insists on Santhanam for STR49: Tamil cinema needs laughter
Tamil actor Silambarasan, popularly known as Simbu, recently shared the heartfelt reason behind casting comedian-actor Santhanam in his upcoming film, tentatively titled STR49, directed by Ramkumar Balakrishnan. Speaking at the audio launch of the horror-comedy Devil’s Double Next Level, which features Santhanam in the lead, Simbu explained that his decision was driven by a desire to bring more laughter to Tamil cinema.
Simbu expressed concern about the current trend in cinema, where serious and action-packed films dominate, leaving little room for comedy. There is a noticeable decline in comedy content. Tamil cinema needs more light-hearted, feel-good films to bring joy to the audience, he remarked. Simbu added that Santhanam’s absence from the industry has been felt, as the comedian has the rare ability to captivate both on-screen and off-screen with his humor.
Having collaborated with Santhanam on multiple successful projects, Simbu emphasized that his decision to bring him on board for STR49 was more than just a friendship gesture. He believes Santhanam's comedic talent is essential for the film industry. Santhanam’s comedy is unmatched, and we need more of that in our films, he said.
Recalling their close friendship, Simbu shared that when he called Santhanam for the role, he didn’t hesitate. One call was enough. He would agree to work with me without asking for a script, Simbu said. Fans of the duo are excited to see their reunion on-screen in STR49, where they can expect not just action, but plenty of laughter.
