SC notes Karnataka’s assurance on ‘Thug Life’ security
The Supreme Court on Thursday recorded Karnataka’s assurance to provide full protection and security for the release of Thug Life, a film by director Mani Ratnam and actor Kamal Haasan. The bench, led by Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Manmohan, instructed the state to take legal action against anyone trying to block the film’s release through violence or intimidation.
The court was hearing a public interest plea by Bengaluru resident M. Mahesh Reddy, who alleged that Karnataka authorities had unofficially blocked the film’s release using police pressure, despite it being cleared by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Controversy arose after Kamal Haasan stated at the film’s audio launch that Kannada is born out of Tamil, which drew backlash in Karnataka. His refusal to apologise led to an unofficial ban on the movie.
In response, the Karnataka Home Department filed an affidavit stating no official ban exists and pledged to ensure safety for the cast, crew, and audience if the film is released. The state affirmed its duty to uphold the law and protect citizens’ rights.
The Supreme Court emphasized that a CBFC-certified film must be allowed to release and that mobs cannot dictate terms. The rule of law must prevail, the bench said, making it clear that threats of violence cannot override constitutional freedoms.
