Prakash Raj questioned by ED in betting case

Actor Prakash Raj appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday in connection with an ongoing investigation into the promotion of illegal online betting platforms. The actor was seen arriving at the ED office in Basheerbagh, Hyderabad, responding to a summons issued in the case.

Earlier this year, the Telangana Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against 25 celebrities and influencers—including Prakash Raj, Rana Daggubati, Vijay Deverakonda, and Manchu Lakshmi—for allegedly endorsing illegal betting apps via their social media platforms.

The FIR was filed at Miyapur Police Station following a petition by PM Phanindra Sarma, a 32-year-old businessman. Sarma claimed that during an interaction with youth on March 16, he learned that many had been misled into investing money in gambling apps promoted by celebrities. He nearly fell for it himself but was stopped by his family.

The complaint accuses the celebrities of accepting payments to promote betting platforms that mislead users, particularly affecting lower- and middle-income families. These promotions, Sarma said, build false trust among vulnerable people, leading to serious financial loss.

The police have invoked multiple charges under the Telangana Gaming Act and the Information Technology Act, including Section 66(D), which addresses online fraud and identity misuse.

Officer G. Ramesh Naidu is leading the investigation, which highlights growing concern over the influence of celebrity-backed betting promotions. Inspector K Kranthi Kumar stated that the authorities are committed to protecting the public from such exploitative practices.

Prakash Raj is a well-known actor, especially recognized for his roles in films like Wanted and Singham.
