Michael Douglas to present restored Cuckoo’s Nest
Veteran actor Michael Douglas is set to present a newly restored version of Milos Forman’s classic film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic this July. The screening marks the film’s 50th anniversary and will be featured in the festival’s ‘Out of the Past’ section.
Douglas, who co-produced the 1975 film with the late Saul Zaentz, will be joined at the Gala Screening by Paul Zaentz (Saul’s nephew) and members of Forman’s family. The event also pays tribute to Forman’s long-standing connection with the festival.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest made history by sweeping the five major Academy Awards—Best Picture (Douglas and Zaentz), Best Director (Forman), Best Actor (Jack Nicholson), Best Actress (Louise Fletcher), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Lawrence Hauben and Bo Goldman). The film is based on Ken Kesey’s novel and tells the story of Randle McMurphy, a rebellious man who challenges the rules of a mental institution, becoming a symbol of resistance and freedom.
Festival executive director Krystof Mucha said, We are truly honored to present One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest on its 50th anniversary. Forman, Douglas, Zaentz, and actor Danny DeVito, who starred in the film, have all received the festival’s Crystal Globe for outstanding artistic contribution to world cinema.
The screening not only celebrates the film’s legacy but also highlights its deep ties to the Karlovy Vary Film Festival and Czech cinema.
