L2: Empuraan removes controversial scenes amid debate
Two days after Malayalam superstar Mohanlal assured that controversial scenes from L2: Empuraan would be removed, producer Antony Perumbavoor confirmed that over two minutes of footage had been deleted.
Speaking to the media, Perumbavoor stated that the decision was made collectively by the film’s producers, director Prithviraj Sukumaran, and lead actors, including Mohanlal. He clarified that the edit was not made due to pressure or fear but out of responsibility toward the audience.
"We never intended to hurt anyone's sentiments. If some viewers were unhappy, we felt it was our duty to address their concerns. That’s why we all agreed to make the edits," he said.
Dismissing claims that the changes were made under political pressure, Perumbavoor reiterated that the team would take similar steps in the future if any movie caused genuine distress to audiences. He also defended Prithviraj Sukumaran, saying there was no reason to target him over the issue.
Despite support for the film from Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Leader of the Opposition V D Satheesan, BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar expressed disappointment and said he would not watch Empuraan.
The film, a sequel to Lucifer, sparked controversy over its depiction of right-wing politics and subtle references to the Gujarat riots. While right-wing groups strongly criticized it, Congress and Left supporters praised its political narrative.
Perumbavoor also confirmed that a third part in the Lucifer franchise is in the works.
