Kunal Kamra criticizes censorship with satirical post

Mumbai-based stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has once again stirred controversy with a satirical post titled “How to Kill an Artist Democratically.” The post, shared on social media, appears to be a response to the backlash he is facing after his remarks about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

In the post, Kamra outlines a step-by-step guide on how artists can be silenced. He highlights different stages of outrage, starting with brands withdrawing support, leading to the loss of gigs, and culminating in authorities summoning audiences for questioning. His remarks seem to reference reports that Mumbai Police allegedly sent notices to attendees of his recent show Naya Bharat.

The post reads: “Outrage enough for brands to pull away. Outrage more until even private gigs vanish. Outrage louder so big venues won’t take the risk. Outrage violently until even small spaces shut their doors. Summon their audience, turning art into a crime scene.” Kamra further claims that artists are left with only two choices: to conform or remain silent.

Following this post, Kamra alleged that Mumbai Police visited an address where he hasn’t lived in a decade, calling it a waste of time and public resources.

The comedian is facing three FIRs filed at Khar Police Station by a mayor, a hotelier, and a businessman from Nashik. He has been summoned thrice but has yet to appear.

Meanwhile, the Madras High Court granted him interim anticipatory bail until April 7, considering the threats he has received following his recent comments.
