Kannada writer HS Venkatesh Murthy dies at 80

HS Venkatesh Murthy, a beloved Kannada writer, educator, and lyricist, passed away on May 30, 2025, at the age of 80 due to age-related health issues. He was receiving treatment at a private hospital in Kengeri, Bengaluru.

Born on June 23, 1944, HSV was known for his deep passion for literature and education. He taught for over 30 years at St. Joseph’s College of Commerce in Bengaluru, where he also earned his doctorate. His impact on students and Kannada literature was profound.

Murthy wrote more than 100 books, covering poetry, plays, and novels. His play Hoovi was included in the ICSE Kannada curriculum, introducing young students to his thoughtful writing. His literary work reflected rich cultural values and emotional depth.

Beyond literature, HSV made notable contributions to Kannada cinema and television. He wrote lyrics and dialogues for many well-known films such as Chinnari Mutha, Kotreshi Kanasu, America America, Maithri, and Kirik Party. The song Thoogu Manchadalli Koothu from Kirik Party is among his popular works.

Throughout his career, Murthy received many honors, including the prestigious Bala Puraskar Award from the Central Sahitya Akademi for his contributions to children's literature.

His passing is a significant loss to the Kannada literary and film communities. HSV’s work will continue to inspire future generations and remain a treasured part of Karnataka’s cultural heritage.
