Joseph Kosinski to helm 'Miami Vice' remake
Joseph Kosinski, best known for directing the blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick, will helm the upcoming Miami Vice remake for Universal Pictures. The screenplay will be written by Dan Gilroy, though plot details remain under wraps.
The new film is inspired by the hit 1980s TV show Miami Vice, which followed undercover detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs, played by Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas. The original series aired on NBC from 1984 to 1989 and became a pop culture icon.
A film version was previously released in 2006, directed by Michael Mann and starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell. While it developed a cult following, it didn’t perform well in theatres.
The casting for the new remake hasn't been announced yet. Along with directing, Kosinski will also produce the film through his company, Monolith. Dylan Clark, who previously worked with Kosinski on Oblivion and also produced the Planet of the Apes series, will join as a co-producer under Dylan Clark Productions.
Kosinski’s recent success with Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed nearly $1.5 billion worldwide, has set high expectations for his next projects. His upcoming film F1, starring Brad Pitt, is scheduled to hit U.S. theatres on June 27, 2025.
