Ethan Coen’s ‘Honey Don’t!’ gets standing ovation

Ethan Coen’s solo film Honey Don’t! ended the 78th Cannes Film Festival with a bang, receiving a 6.5-minute standing ovation at its midnight premiere. The quirky dark comedy stars Margaret Qualley, Aubrey Plaza, and Chris Evans, and was co-written by Coen and his wife, Tricia Cooke.

The film follows Honey O’Donahue (Qualley), a small-town private investigator, as she investigates bizarre deaths tied to a mysterious church led by a charming preacher (Evans). With its offbeat humor and twisted plot, Honey Don’t! earned big laughs and praise from the audience.

“It’s short for a movie that began after midnight—very humane!” Coen joked at the premiere, referring to its 90-minute runtime.

The film also features Charlie Day, Billy Eichner, and Lera Abova. Focus Features will release Honey Don’t! in the U.S. on August 22, 2025, with international distribution by Universal Pictures. It’s expected to receive an R rating.

Coen’s collaboration with Cooke continues following Drive-Away Dolls, blending his signature style with her sharp writing. With a strong cast and classic Coen wit, Honey Don’t! is poised to be a standout release this year.
