Ekta Kapoor explains why she rejected ‘Kyunki’ return
Producer Ekta Kapoor has shared why she first said “no” to bringing back her iconic TV show Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi on its 25th anniversary. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Kapoor explained that relaunching the beloved show felt risky due to the powerful nostalgia it holds for millions.
“When the idea came up, my first reaction was a firm no,” Ekta wrote. “Nostalgia always wins. Why disturb that?”
She pointed out how television has changed. In the early 2000s, shows focused on a few big cities. Now, audiences are scattered across many platforms. Kapoor questioned whether relaunching Kyunki would hurt its legacy as the highest-rated show of its time.
However, research helped her rethink. Studies once showed that Kyunki helped spark change—encouraging women to speak up in family matters. The show tackled serious topics like domestic issues, marital abuse, and age discrimination.
Ekta said the show wasn’t just about TRPs. It gave voice to women and brought tough topics to the dinner table. That, she said, is its real legacy.
After talks with her team and network heads, she asked herself: “Can we use TV again to create impact, not just numbers?” Her answer: “Let’s do this!”
The new version promises to be bold and meaningful, aiming to spark conversation while staying true to its emotional roots.
