Dia Mirza promotes plastic-free July with youth
Actress and environmental advocate Dia Mirza marked the beginning of Plastic-Free July by applauding young people’s efforts to fight plastic pollution. In an Instagram post, she reflected on a World Environment Day event held at the United Nations House in India and celebrated the success of the Tide Turners Plastic Challenge.
Dia, who is a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), said the event reminded her of the urgent need to reduce the gap between the plastic waste we create and how much we can actually manage. She praised the Tide Turners Plastic Challenge, calling it a global movement that educates and encourages youth to take action against plastic pollution.
She shared, “The energy and commitment of young changemakers was inspiring. Over 700,000 youth in India have already joined the movement — a huge step toward a plastic-free future.”
As Plastic-Free July begins, Dia encouraged everyone to think about their plastic use and make better choices. “Every small step we take helps us reduce our plastic footprint,” she wrote.
She also congratulated the Tide Turners team for winning the 2024 Prince Talal International Prize. The initiative was selected from 62 global entries for its role in inspiring youth-led change to beat plastic pollution. Dia ended her post with a hopeful message: “Let’s keep the tide turning.”
