Aamir Khan eyed Langda Tyagi role in ‘Omkara’
Aamir Khan was once keen to play Langda Tyagi in Vishal Bhardwaj’s 2006 film Omkara, but the filmmakers ultimately chose Saif Ali Khan for the role. Writer Robin Bhatt recently shared in an interview that Aamir showed strong interest, but after discussions, the team felt Saif would be a better fit for the rugged character.
Omkara, based on Shakespeare’s Othello, featured Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, and Saif Ali Khan in lead roles. After casting Ajay as Omkara and Kareena as Dolly, the team struggled to finalize Langda Tyagi. Robin recalled that Aamir was willing to play the villain, but they eventually decided against it.
Once Saif was selected, another challenge surfaced—he wasn’t fluent in the rough western Uttar Pradesh dialect needed for the role. Determined to meet expectations, Saif cut his hair and underwent intensive language training with Deepak Dobriyal, who also acted in the film. Together, they spent hours perfecting the dialect.
Saif’s hard work paid off, and his performance as Langda Tyagi is now considered one of the highlights of his career, earning critical praise and several awards.
Meanwhile, Aamir Khan was last seen in Laal Singh Chaddha and Saif Ali Khan in the Telugu action film Devara. Unfortunately, both films struggled to make an impact at the box office.
