Prominent writers and social activists have penned a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah urging him to immediately halt the ongoing land acquisition process in Channarayapatna, Devanahalli taluk, where fertile agricultural land is being earmarked for industrial development.

In the letter, the signatories express deep concern over the government’s move, stating that it is creating a situation of conflict between farmers and the administration. "We fail to understand why the government is so adamant in pursuing this plan despite the farmers' clear opposition," the letter reads.

While acknowledging the need for land in developmental projects, the writers emphasized that “development must follow a fair and transparent process. The lands in question are highly fertile and have been the source of livelihood for thousands of farming families who have unequivocally opposed handing them over for industrial use.”

The letter also points out that the current land acquisition process was originally initiated by the previous BJP government, which the Congress party—then in opposition—had vehemently opposed. “You yourself visited the protest site and extended solidarity to the farmers. Why, then, is your government now insisting on going forward with the same plan?” the writers questioned.

They warned that the final notification sent to the farmers has sparked widespread panic and resistance. Various farmer and civil society organizations have announced a large protest — ‘Devanahalli Chalo’ — scheduled for June 25.

“You have always been sensitive to public sentiment. We earnestly request you to intervene immediately, resolve the issue, and send a positive message across the state. We trust that you will not disappoint us,” the letter concluded.

The growing tension around the Channarayapatna land issue comes amid broader debates about sustainable development and the rights of farming communities, particularly in rapidly urbanizing zones near Bengaluru.
