Singer Sonu Nigam has sparked strong criticism from the Kannada community following controversial comments he made regarding his recent experience in Bengaluru. On May 1, during an event at East Point College, Nigam was asked to sing a Kannada song.
While expressing his love for Karnataka and the Kannada people, he stated that he had sung in Kannada many times and felt at home there. However, his subsequent remarks about Kannada protests leading to a “terror attack like Pahalgam” caused widespread outrage. Pro-Kannada organizations swiftly condemned his statement, questioning the link between singing in Kannada and terrorist activities.
They demanded that Nigam be banned from the Kannada film industry and that a voluntary complaint be filed against him with the police.
Prominent Kannada producer and leader Sa Ra Govindu also criticized Nigam’s comments. While acknowledging Nigam’s talent, Govindu demanded an apology, pointing out that comparing the Pahalgam attack to Kannada protests was illogical and offensive.
He further warned that Nigam’s statements could harm his future prospects in the Kannada film industry. Govindu emphasized that responsible artists should refrain from making provocative statements, urging the Film Industry Federation to take action, including a ban on Nigam’s participation in Kannada cinema until he publicly apologizes. The call for accountability has set the stage for potential repercussions if the singer fails to issue an apology.
