The silk cocoon market here has seen a surge in cocoon prices over the past one and a half months, bringing joy to farmers.

However, there has been a decline in the quantity of cocoons arriving at the market. As prices are rising, the decrease in production has raised concerns among farmers.

On Monday, the mixed variety (C.B) silk cocoons were sold at an average price of ₹614 per kg, ranging from a minimum of ₹450 to a maximum of ₹678. The higher quality bivoltine (B.V) cocoons were sold at an average price of ₹724, with prices ranging from ₹286 to ₹825. The market recorded an arrival of 147 lots (7,552.480 kg) of mixed cocoons and 388 lots (33,374.570 kg) of B.V cocoons.

The silk cocoon market here is one of the most significant in the state. Farmers from various parts of the state, as well as those from neighboring Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Maharashtra, bring their cocoons to this market for sale. The reelers who purchase the cocoons sell them not only locally but also in domestic and international markets.

Increased Heat: "Due to adverse weather conditions, crop production has declined. Thanks to the summer, the heat is rising day by day, and temperatures are increasing. Additionally, there are reports of the 'milk-silk disease' in the crops," said K. Ravi, President of the Ramanagar District Sericulture Farmers Association.

"Recently, the quality of silk produced at sericulture centers has been declining. This has also contributed to the drop in silk production. Earlier, over 10 tons of mixed cocoons would come to the market, and B.V cocoons would reach up to 50 tons. Now, the production of both has decreased. The officials from the silk department should pay attention to this," he added.
