Select crop varieties that suit the soil: Agricultural Scientist
Agricultural scientist K.N. Jagadish emphasized that selecting crop varieties suitable for the local environment can lead to better crop yields.
He was speaking at the agricultural development pledge campaign organized by ICAR and the Agricultural Science Centre in Kottur village of the taluk.
He noted that varieties such as KMR 322, 630, and 360 are suitable for this region. “Farmers should carefully select seed varieties that are compatible with the local climate, sunlight, and soil conditions,” he advised.
He further explained that using Arka micro-nutrient fertilizers can significantly improve seed germination. Since soil fertility plays a vital role in crop health, he encouraged all farmers to get their soil tested and obtain a soil health certificate.
Manjesh from the Paddy Development Board said that paddy cultivation is expected to expand to more areas in the district. He also added that green gram can be cultivated with minimal water, and if grown consistently for three years, it can support farmers’ livelihoods for up to 30 years. Wild animals like wild boars and deer are less likely to damage these crops, he claimed.
Somashankar explained that the campaign is being conducted nationwide. The program aims to promote modern farming techniques, the adoption of new technologies, efficient water usage, and integrated farming practices to help farmers cultivate better crops and become self-reliant.
Information on seed treatment, improved crop varieties, horticultural practices, and the use of modern machinery was also shared as part of the integrated farming approach.
Assistant Horticulture Officer Karthik and several local farmers were present at the event.
