Rising temperatures in city boost demand for earthen pots
Bengaluru, once known for its pleasant climate, is now experiencing a steady rise in temperatures as summer approaches. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the city’s temperature is expected to hover around 33°C, with further increases anticipated in the coming weeks.
This heatwave has led to a surge in demand for cool drinking water, prompting many residents to turn to traditional earthen pots. Local vendors have reported a sharp rise in sales as people seek natural and eco-friendly ways to keep water cool. Unlike refrigerators, clay pots maintain a steady cooling effect without electricity, making them a preferred choice, especially among those who avoid modern cooling appliances. Additionally, roadside stalls selling refreshing drinks like sugarcane juice, coconut water, and ragi ambali are witnessing increased footfall. Health experts advise citizens to stay hydrated and avoid direct sun exposure between 12 PM and 3 PM. With temperatures predicted to rise between 37°C and 39°C in March and April, the trend of purchasing earthen pots is expected to grow further.
Many residents are also reusing pots from previous years, reinforcing sustainable consumption habits. As the summer intensifies, Bengaluru’s markets will likely continue to see a booming trade in earthenware, catering to the city’s need for natural cooling solutions. Apart from individual households, restaurants and juice vendors have also started using earthen pots to store water and beverages, as they keep liquids naturally cool without altering the taste.
