Rape case against actor Sheshgiri Basavaraj closed
A rape case filed against Kannada film actor Sheshgiri Basavaraj has taken a turn, as the police have submitted a ‘B-report’ to the court, citing insufficient evidence to proceed further with the investigation. The complaint was originally filed at Subramanya Nagar Police Station, where the survivor alleged that she was drugged and sexually assaulted by the actor.
According to her statement, she became acquainted with Basavaraj in 2014, and over time, their acquaintance turned into a friendship. She further claimed that on one occasion, he allegedly spiked her drink, raped her, and later used photos and videos to blackmail her. However, the medical examination conducted on the woman did not support the allegation of physical assault. Additionally, the investigation did not yield any substantial evidence, such as corroborating witnesses or forensic support. Due to these factors, the police concluded that the matter appeared to be linked to a financial dispute between the two parties rather than a criminal offense.
As a result, a ‘B-report’—indicating no evidence to proceed—was filed in court. This decision has sparked debates, with some questioning the handling of sensitive cases involving high-profile individuals, while others argue for fair treatment under the law regardless of celebrity status. Women’s rights activists have urged authorities to revisit procedures in handling such allegations, emphasizing the need for thorough and unbiased investigation processes. Meanwhile, supporters of the actor welcomed the B-report, calling it a relief from defamation. The court is expected to review the report and decide on further action soon.
