Priests’ Federation demands apology for defamatory social media remarks

In recent times, there has been a growing concern over the misuse of social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube. Some individuals have been using these platforms to make derogatory comments about temple priests. One such incident involves Nagaraj Kotturu, who posted a video on YouTube making defamatory remarks about priests, alleging that they are profiting from their religious duties. This sparked outrage within the priest community, leading to strong condemnation from the Akhila Bharatha Asanghatita Purohitha Karmikara Federation (All India Unorganised Priests’ Federation). The federation has demanded an apology from Nagaraj and called for the removal of the video, emphasizing that priests devote their lives to the service of the gods and perform rituals for the well-being of the people. Srinivas Murthy, president of the federation, strongly criticized Nagaraj’s statements and called for a public retraction to prevent further harm to the sentiments of the priest community. In response, the federation has filed a formal complaint with the Basavanagudi police station against Nagaraj and other individuals who have posted derogatory remarks about priests on social media. Over 70 priests have endorsed the complaint, urging law enforcement authorities to take strict action against those misusing social media to tarnish the reputation of priests and their invaluable service. Several prominent members of the public, including religious leaders and social activists, have also voiced their concerns, stressing the need for greater responsibility and respect when using social media platforms.
