In a sweeping crackdown against autorickshaw drivers overcharging passengers, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has seized over 1,000 autos across Bengaluru in just one week. The operation follows a surge in complaints against app-based auto services demanding double fares after the ban on bike taxis. RTO formed 20 enforcement teams across 11 jurisdictions to inspect autos for permit violations, fare gouging, insurance lapses, and missing documents. Out of 3,531 autos checked, 1,006 were booked for various offences, and 233 were seized. The majority of the seized vehicles belonged to app-based platforms.

The worst offenders were autos linked to apps like Rapido (92 cases, 32 seizures), Uber (59 cases, 14 seizures), Ola (35 cases, 4 seizures), and Namma Yatri (25 cases, 4 seizures). Additionally, 795 cases and 179 seizures were linked to other platforms. Area-wise, the most seizures were in Central Bengaluru (69), followed by Jnanabharathi (34), Electronic City (22), and KR Puram (19). The city’s South, East, and North divisions also reported significant violations.

The RTO stated that this is just the beginning, and more operations will be carried out to curb exploitation by auto drivers, especially those affiliated with ride-hailing apps. Authorities have urged commuters to report incidents of overcharging or harassment. This move aims to restore commuter trust and regulate fair pricing in public transport, while ensuring app-based auto services operate within legal boundaries.
