Nandini stall owner faces ₹1 crore tax notice

Small traders plan citywide protest over rising tax burden and fear of more enforcement actions.

The Commercial Tax Department has intensified its crackdown on small-scale businesses, with a fresh round of tax notices creating a stir across Bengaluru. In a recent instance, Ravi, the owner of a Nandini Milk Booth in Ullal, received a shock notice demanding a staggering ₹1.03 crore in taxes.

The notice, reportedly related to pending GST dues, has left the booth owner anxious and confused. This development comes amid growing unrest among small traders who are grappling with the unexpected burden of large tax demands.

Reacting to the sudden pressure, several Nandini Booth operators have extended support to a proposed three-day milk sales strike set to begin on Wednesday. The move aims to protest what they view as an unjustified and harsh tax imposition on small entrepreneurs. The fear of more such notices has already begun to ripple through the small business community. In response, many local shopkeepers, including owners of bakeries and condiment stores, convened a meeting at the Labour Council Office in the city. Discussions centered around the proposed shutdown on July 25, and strategies for staging widespread protests.

Business owners are now preparing for a full-day closure to highlight their grievances and demand reconsideration of the tax policies that they argue disproportionately affect smaller establishments. As tensions escalate, the government faces increasing pressure to clarify its tax enforcement actions and offer relief to the city’s struggling micro-enterprises.
