The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has increased metro fares and is now exploring alternative revenue sources. To boost non-ticket revenue, BMRCL plans to introduce cargo transport services during non-peak hours, similar to the Delhi Metro. For this initiative, BMRCL has partnered with Blue Dart Courier to facilitate freight movement. The plan involves using metro trains to transport cargo during designated time slots: before 8 AM, from 12 PM to 4 PM, and after 9 PM. This strategy aims to maximize metro usage while minimizing operational costs for private companies. BMRCL is also in discussions with various firms to expand this service. The Baiyappanahalli station will serve as a key hub for cargo operations. Authorities believe this will benefit both metro operations and businesses by reducing logistics expenses and road congestion. In Delhi, select metro coaches are reserved for cargo during non-peak hours. Bengaluru Metro is likely to adopt a similar approach, ensuring minimal disruption to passenger services. Officials anticipate a positive response, as this move could help decongest city roads while providing BMRCL with additional revenue. Additionally, BMRCL is considering offering a 5% fare discount for passengers during cargo transport hours. The metro currently operates 57 trains across a 76 km network, with plans for further expansion. It also generates revenue through advertisements at stations. To further boost earnings, BMRCL is evaluating commercial activities on 1.66 acres of its land, including leasing spaces for offices and hotels, particularly at Majestic Interchange Station.
