Namma metro stations boost security with AI tech
The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has introduced advanced security measures across Namma Metro’s Purple Line stations, incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) technology to enhance commuter safety. BMRCL has installed upgraded CCTV surveillance systems at six metro stations between Baiyappanahalli and MG Road. These systems monitor not only internal station areas but also surrounding premises. Integrated with AI, the new surveillance setup detects potential threats instantly, ensuring quicker response times to safeguard passengers.
As part of these enhancements, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology has been deployed to identify vehicle number plates at station entrances. With AI-powered video analytics, suspicious activities and incidents can be detected in real-time, significantly strengthening security, according to metro officials. Speaking on the initiative, BMRCL Managing Director M. Maheshwar Rao emphasized that passenger safety remains a top priority. He added that the integration of AI and ANPR technologies would allow continuous monitoring and swift decision-making, ultimately improving public security across the network.
Additionally, Baiyappanahalli station now features 10 new self-service ticket vending machines, based on QR code technology. Passengers can conveniently pay and collect tickets within 30 seconds. These machines are currently operational only at Baiyappanahalli but will soon be installed at other stations. Presently, Namma Metro operates across a 76-kilometer network, with about 55 trains running on the Purple and Green lines. Construction of the Blue and Pink lines is underway, while the Yellow Line is expected to open in a few months.
