Metro card trouble, commuters shocked as NCMC cards fail
Thousands of Namma Metro users have been hit by a major technical glitch that has rendered their National Common Mobility Cards (NCMC) unusable. Commuters holding NCMC cards are currently unable to recharge them or use them for metro travel, despite having sufficient balance.
The issue has also affected older mobility cards, causing widespread inconvenience among daily commuters. Users reported that even with available funds, the system is denying access to metro services. In response, BMRCL (Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited) has temporarily halted the distribution of new NCMC cards until April 15.
The problem arose after RBL Bank, the provider of NCMC services, changed its vendors. This switch caused backend system issues, disrupting card operations. BMRCL officials assured that the issue is expected to be resolved by April 15.
Compared to users of contactless smart cards, tokens, or QR code-based systems, NCMC card users are currently fewer in number. However, the disruption has still affected a significant portion of metro commuters. The NCMC is designed as a universal mobility card, usable across various transport systems in India, including Namma Metro and BMTC buses.
It can also be used at retail stores, petrol stations, and shopping malls, making it a convenient all-in-one payment solution—when functioning properly. Until the issue is resolved, passengers are advised to use alternate ticketing methods such as tokens or QR codes for uninterrupted travel.
