Meat sale banned in city for Mahavir Jayanti
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has issued an order prohibiting the sale and slaughter of meat within its limits on April 10 in observance of Mahavir Jayanti.
The Joint Director of the BBMP Animal Husbandry Department announced the ban, which will apply to all slaughterhouses and meat shops across the city. The directive has been issued to respect the sentiments of the Jain community, for whom the day holds great religious importance.
Mahavir Jayanti, celebrated on the 13th day (Trayodashi) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Chaitra, marks the birth of Lord Mahavir, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism. This year, the festival falls on April 10.
According to Jain and Hindu traditions, Lord Mahavir was born in 599 BC in Kundagram, Bihar, into a royal family. Named Vardhaman in his early years, he renounced worldly life at the age of 30 and pursued a path of deep spiritual practice and non-violence.
Mahavir Jayanti is observed with prayers, processions, and acts of charity. Devotees also emphasize the values of peace, compassion, and self-discipline taught by Mahavir. The celebration is not limited to India but is also marked by Jain communities across the world.
