Karnataka reclaims strategic Hebbal land for key infrastructure projects

After a period of uncertainty, the Karnataka government has asserted its intent to take back a vital 45-acre parcel of land in Hebbal. This strategically located property is earmarked for significant infrastructure development, including a Metro depot, a crucial tunnel road, and an integrated transport hub. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar confirmed the decision following a high-level meeting, emphasizing that the land is essential for upgrading Hebbal, which serves as a gateway to Bengaluru.

The move comes amidst concerns that real estate interests might be hindering the transfer of this land to BMRCL. With increasing pressure from various stakeholders, including public figures, to expedite the process for Metro expansion, the government's announcement is seen as a decisive step. The Deputy CM stated that a comprehensive plan is being developed to integrate these diverse transport projects on the site.

The land, originally acquired by KIADB in 2000 for a private company that failed to develop it, is now needed by BMRCL for its Phase 3 Metro expansion. BMRCL has offered a substantial amount for the land, which is technically under KIADB's control but was intended for private use, creating legal complexities.

BMRCL plans to establish a major Metro station at Hebbal, connecting multiple lines and integrating with the suburban rail project. The site will also accommodate multi-level parking, a bus terminal, and a Metro depot. To avoid lengthy legal battles that could arise from a direct transfer through KIADB, the government had previously suggested direct negotiations between BMRCL and the private entity. An upcoming meeting is expected to finalize the path forward for this critical project aimed at enhancing Bengaluru's connectivity.
