Karnataka on rain alert from July 2
After a brief lull, monsoon showers are expected to intensify across Karnataka, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for all districts from July 2 to 5. Officials anticipate widespread rainfall during this period, with moderate to heavy showers likely in several regions.
Rainfall had recently declined in the coastal and Malnad regions over the past two weeks. However, fresh forecasts suggest a return of rains from July 1, beginning with scattered showers in select districts, excluding Udupi and Dakshina Kannada. A statewide yellow alert will be in effect starting July 2, urging residents to stay cautious and prepared. In Coastal Karnataka, only light to moderate rainfall is predicted, but interior regions could experience heavier showers. The IMD’s alert aims to prevent disruptions and mitigate flood risks in vulnerable areas.
Meanwhile, Karnataka marked a historic moment this week as the Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) dam reached full capacity in June for the first time in 93 years. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah offered the traditional ‘bagina’ at the dam on Monday. Tamil Nadu’s Mettur reservoir has also filled up.
In Uttara Kannada, consistent rainfall over the past month has revived several waterfalls and increased water flow in the Aghanashini River. The Unchalli Falls have become a visual spectacle with roaring waters. Additionally, the release of one lakh cusecs from the Narayanpur Dam has submerged the Kaddlur Upendra Teertha temple on the banks of the Krishna River in Raichur district. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
