The Karnataka government has increased the list of essential medicines from 732 to 1,032, announced Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao in the Assembly. Replying to MLA Ashwath Narayan during Question Hour, Rao said this move aims to ensure people don't face medicine shortages.

Medicine Shortage and Tender Issues

Rao explained that some medicines are unavailable because bidders are not participating in tenders. "Some medicines are in short supply because tenders have received no response, mainly due to their low value and demand," he said. To address this, the government is simplifying tender rules to encourage more participation.

He also said that hospitals can buy medicines directly in emergencies under the National Free Services Programme. Additionally, 25% extra medicines are being bought from existing suppliers (KSMSCL) to meet urgent needs, and there’s a proposal to buy 23 medicines worth ₹9.5 crore from KAPL under a special exemption.

Strict Action on Fake and Poor-Quality Drugs

Rao informed that 10 cases were filed in 2023-24 and 5 cases in 2024-25 under the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules. Also, 87 pharmacies were suspended and 3 closed for violating drug laws.

Out of 112 approved drug inspector posts, 104 remain vacant due to pending court cases. "The case is under investigation in the Supreme Court," Rao noted. Meanwhile, Assistant Drug Controllers are handling inspection duties.
